John Lueken serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Strategist at CapWealth Advisors. He joined the firm in April of 2014 after a decade working with Goldman Sachs in their Manhattan offices. As vice president and equity analyst with the macro trading team of the Securities division, John built, developed and traded unique custom solutions for client portfolios. Focused on researching and understanding global macro fundamentals and their impact on the equity and fixed-income marketplace, John identified sectors, industries and single stock investment ideas best positioned to capitalize on the changing macro environment. Additionally, he authored a daily morning perspective that was disseminated to over 700 colleagues and clients focused on flow-of-funds data, short-interest activity and single stock fundamentals. Under John’s leadership, the business became the fastest growing and most profitable desk in the Goldman Sachs securities division from 2006 through 2012.
Prior to that, he served for two years as a financial analyst in the firm’s Equity Products Group. John earned his MBA from Columbia University’s business school where his coursework was concentrated in security analysis and applied-value investing. Says John, “These have been my passion for the past several years. Since graduation from Columbia, I’ve worked tirelessly to develop my fundamental investment framework. I apply it daily to investment ideas while being mindful of the changing global macro environment.” In May 2015, John’s outlook on the biotech company Illumina were featured in a Barron’s magazine article. When John came on board in 2014, RIABiz Magazine wrote a piece on him. Last year, John was invited to the Baron Funds’ Rocky Mountain Think Tank Roundtable, one of only 11 RIA executives to be so honored.
John is from St. Louis, MO, and graduated with a BS in business administration from Washington University’s Olin School of Business. While studying abroad his junior year at the London School of Economics, he interned as a market surveillance analyst at the London Metal Exchange. John earned his MBA from Columbia University, holds his Series 7, 63, 55, 3, 25 and 65 licenses and has passed CFA levels I and II. He and his wife Samantha have two daughters and a son. John enjoys skiing, basketball, baseball, golf, travel and reading, and is an active fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In 2015, John joined the Nashville Zoo‘s Grow Wild Campaign Cabinet and Individual Gifts Committee. In 2017, John joined the Nashville Zoo Board of Directors.
